Pastoral Job Description

The candidate for Bethel Baptist Church will be first and foremost a sanctifying shepherd who summons every resource in heaven and on earth to nurture God’s people until “we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.” (Eph. 4:13 NKJV)

Elder Qualified

An incoming pastor will meet the Biblical qualifications of 1 Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:5-9.

He will have a proper grasp of the biblical ordering of God, Family, Church, and then Others.

He must be able to draw from the original Biblical languages and interface with historic and current theological thought such as one would find in a seminary education.

His study of Scripture will have led him to the historic tenants of our Southern Baptist denomination, including the Divine inspiration of the Scriptures, the Trinity and salvation by faith alone in Christ alone.

He prays; he meditates on Scripture; he has suffered defending the truths of Scripture.

Ministry Philosophy

He must believe in the primacy of exegetical teaching. He weighs Scripture against Scripture, and Scripture against commentary with integrity. He hungers for God’s word.

His primary preaching is expository, and normally book by book.

His preferred church polity will be rule by a plurality of elders.

He will have a high Ecclesiology that informs his view of discipleship, evangelism, church growth, and discipline.

Gifting

Our incoming pastor will be a gifted teacher, in all circumstances and to all audiences.

He recognizes members’ talents and gifts, and he can train leaders in the church.

He can counsel competently toward godliness.

He must be able to connect with the surrounding community. He is a friend of sinners. He can defend Christian truth, values and principles with secular reasoning.

He discerns the correct way to divide Scripture, and he champions the essential doctrines of our faith. He exposes historic and current heresies and poisons; he distinguishes between Biblical truth and human reason.

General Pastoral Care

He will wisely steward his time to keep tabs on every ministry of the church, including corporate worship, community outreach, children and youth ministries, men’s & women’s groups, and small groups. He will pray regularly for these ministries and for every member of the church. He will provide premarital counseling and conduct weddings; he will conduct funerals and follow-up care for family members. He will make hospital visits and he will visit those who are shut-in.
